Additional documents that were mentioned during the
GSAPP Culture Conference workshop on Cyber Bullying
Cyber Safety Tips for Parents This document is a very comprehensive list of safety tips for parents, covering general online safety, chat & IM, social networking, what to do if safety issues arise, etc. This document is not meant to be an eye-catching, quick-read handout; it is meant to be comprehensive.
Cyber Safety Tips for Teens This document is a very comprehensive list of safety tips for teens, covering general online safety, chat & IM, social networking, sexting, gaming, what to do if you run into trouble online, etc. Like the Cyber Safety Tips for Parents, this document is not meant to be an eye-catching, quick-read handout; it is meant to be comprehensive.
If you are looking for eye-catching, single-page handouts on specific aspects of cyber safety, there are a number of sites that offer these, and the links to them will be added to the Resources page of this website in the future. The resource list included in your handout folders at the workshop lists many recommended websites, many of which have safety tips sheets.
During the workshop on Oct. 8, I mentioned recent changes that had taken place with regard to Facebook's privacy settings. For further information about these changes, follow this link (this will take you out of the Spectrum Diversity website) to the ACLU website: http://www.aclu.org/blog/technology-and-liberty/facebook-addresses-several-privacy-problems. Once there, click on the active links in this article to find additional articles about protecting your privacy on Facebook.
I also mentioned the Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use, and a document available on the csriu.org website regarding the legal limits on schools' authority to discipline cyber misbehavior, including an outline of procedures for the investigation of cyber incidents. Follow this link to the CSRIU website: http://www.csriu.org/cyberbully/ and click on "educators' guide." Also look at the other documents on the CSRIU website; very high quality, very detailed information about legal issues surrounding schools and cyber bullying.
